Website Mistakes That Cost Small Businesses Customers

Ten common problems that send visitors away, and how to fix each one.

If your website gets visits but few people contact you, you're probably making one of these mistakes. The good news: almost all of them are fixable.

1. It doesn't work well on phones

Most visits come from mobile. Tiny text, small buttons, or a menu that's hard to use make people leave in seconds.

2. It loads slowly

If it takes too long to open, many visitors bail before seeing your message. Check image sizes and remove scripts you don't use.

3. It's unclear what you do

A vague headline like "Comprehensive solutions for your business" says nothing. Within seconds, it should be obvious what you offer, who it's for, and where you operate.

4. There's no clear call to action

If visitors don't know what to do, they do nothing. Include visible buttons like "Request a Quote" or "Message us on WhatsApp" at the top and bottom of each page.

5. Too many options

A menu with twenty links and five competing messages is confusing. Prioritize one main action and one or two secondary ones.

6. Generic or copied content

Copy that could belong to any business builds no trust and doesn't help SEO. Talk about your customers, your process, and your real results.

7. Unconvincing photos

Obvious stock photos hurt credibility. Use real photos of your business, team, or work, even if they're simple and well lit.

8. No proof to build trust

Show verifiable facts: years of experience, types of clients, real projects, genuine certifications, clear guarantees. Never invent reviews. Beyond being unethical, it shows.

9. Long or broken forms

Asking for ten fields for a simple inquiry drives people away. And a form that doesn't reach your inbox is worse: you lose customers without knowing. Test it regularly.

10. Nobody can find it

A site with no SEO structure, no sitemap, and no Google Search Console connection rarely gets organic traffic. See our guide on what a website needs to show up on Google.

Quick checklist

  • Is it easy to read and tap on my phone?
  • Does it load in a few seconds?
  • Can someone tell what I do within 5 seconds?
  • Is there a visible contact button on every page?
  • Does my form really work?
  • Are my contact details up to date?

If you spot several of these problems, a website redesign may be the best way to fix them all at once.
